  • Was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on March 4, 1953
  • Is really Margaret Crosby Rathmann
  • Has two brothers and two sisters
  • Was interested in teaching sign language to gorillas
  • Studied psychology in college
  • Studied commercial art, fine art, and children’s book writing and illustrating at art schools
  •  Started drawing as a child
  • Has written and illustrated 5 books and illustrated 1 book
  • Has won a famous book award, the 1996 Caldecott Medal, for her book, Officer Buckle and Gloria
  • Took things that happened in her childhood and wrote about them such as her parents’ dog, Skippy
  • Lives and works with her husband on a ranch in California
